The first Steyler Missionary Sisters were sent from Germany to New Guinea on 21st January 1899. When the sisters arrived in what then a German colony, the indigenous people still lived life as if they were in the Stone Age. The sisters built schools and hospitals, and began to prepare the people to encounter the modern world.
