In 1937, Father Van de Velde, an Oblat missionary tried to reach Pelly Bay, the "land of the great whales". He participated in the founding of one of the northernmost missions in the world, totally inaccessible 10 months out of a year. He built a church, founded a community of believers and became a privileged observer of the Inuit whose culture and life he shared for a period of almost 30 years.
