Deze jonge Schotse componist en dirigent van de BBC Philharmonic is een hedendaags katholiek componist die de controverse niet schuwt. Zo beschuldigde hij het Schotse establishment van een verborgen antikatholieke agenda. Het leverde hem heftige reacties op en een verbanning van een paar jaar uit de officiële media in Schotland. Gelukkig was zijn werk nog te horen op concerten in de rest van Europa, Amerika en het Verre Oosten. James MacMillan zet zich af tegen een bepaalde modernistische en atheïstische elite die de desacralisatie van de wereld verkondigt. ‘Deze ontheiliging van het bestaan staat diametraal tegenover de spirituele kracht van de muziek.’ Deze rebellerende Schot bindt de strijd aan met de agressieve propagandisten van een geseculariseerde cultuur, want ‘wat deze mensen verontrust, is dat er zoiets zou bestaan als een innerlijk spiritueel leven.
’Met honderdtwintig composities op zijn naam lijkt deze ‘vliegende Schot’ onvermoeibaar. Zo componeerde hij een muzikaal drama in samenwerking met de aartsbisschop van Canterbury, Rowan Williams. En op vraag van de beroemde cellist Rostropovich schreef hij het magistrale ‘Triduum’ over het Paasmysterie.

This young Scottish composer and conductor of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra is a contemporary catholic composer, who doesn’t shun controversy. As an example: he accused Scottish establishment of a hidden anti-Catholic agenda. This resulted in violent responses and banishment for a few years from official media in Scotland. Fortunately, his work was still heard at concerts all over Europe, America and the Far East. James MacMillan takes distance of a modernistic and atheistic elite which proclaims the desacralisation of the world.
‘This desacralisation is in sharp contrast to the spiritual strength of music.’ This rebelling Scot combats the aggressive propagandists of a secularised culture, ‘because these people are agitated by the fact that something like inner spiritual live could exist’. With over hundred twenty compositions, the ‘flying Scot' doesn’t seem to need rest. He also composed a musical drama in close collaboration with the archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, and on the request of the known cellist Rostropovich he wrote an magnificent `Eastertriduum'.

Ce jeune compositeur catholique contemporain écossais,chef de l’orchestre philharmonique de la BBC, ne craint pas la controverse. Ainsi accuse t-il l'establishment écossais d'un agenda anti-catholique secret. Cette affirmation fut source de réactions véhémentes ainsi que d’un bannissement des médias officiels en Ecosse pour quelques années. Heureusement, on entendait encore son oeuvre lors de concerts dans le reste de l’Europe, en Amérique et en Extrême-Orient. James MacMillan s’oppose à une certaine élite moderniste et athée qui proclame la désacralisation du monde.
‘Cette désacralisation de l’existence s’oppose diamétralement à la force spirituelle de la musique’. Cet Écossais rebelle lutte contre les propagandistes agressifs d'une culture sécularisée, car ‘ce qui préoccupe ces gens, est l’existence même d’une vie spirituelle’. Auteur des cent vingt compositions, cet ‘écossais volant’ semble inlassable. Il a ainsi composé un drame musical en collaboration avec l'archevêque de Canterbury, Rowan Williams. Et à la demande du violoncelliste russe Rostropovich, il a écrit le ‘Triduum’ magistral sur le mystère de Pâques.

Huston Smith doceerde godsdienstfilosofie, onder meer aan het prestigieuze Massachusetts Institute of Technology en hield aan zijn belangstelling voor het Tibetaans boeddhisme een persoonlijke vriendschap met de Dalai lama over. Hij kreeg wereldnaam met zijn diepgravende studies over de wereldgodsdiensten. Zijn boek ‘Een wereld van religies’ haalde een miljoenenoplage en verscheen ook in het Nederlands. Braambos praat met hem over de religie van de indianen en trok daarvoor met hem van de campus van de Berkeley Universiteit (San Francisco) naar het gebied van de Winnebago-indianen. Voorts gaat het over Huston Smiths godsbeeld en over vragen als: welke spiritualiteit voor het derde millennium, wat komt er na het postmodernisme?

Huston Smith
Huston Smith teached Philosophy of religion, including at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute or Technology, and kept from his interest for Tibetan Buddhism a personal friendship with the Dalai Lama. Smith became world-famous with his groundbreaking study on world religions. His book `The Religions of man/The World’s Religions' obtained an edition worth millions. Braambos talks with him on the religion of the Indians and travels with him from the campus of the Berkeley University (San Francisco) to the area of the Winnebago-Indians. Additionally, Huston Smiths talks about his image of God and concerning questions such as: which spirituality for the third millennium or what after postmodernism?

Huston Smith a enseigné la philosophie de la religion, entre autres dans le prestigieux Institute of Technology du Massachusett et a conservé de son intérêt pour le bouddhisme tibétain, une amitié personnelle avec le Dalai-lama. Il doit son renom à ses études approfondies des religions du monde. Son livre ‘The World’s Religions’ tiré à un million d’exemplaires, est également paru en néerlandais. Braambos s’entretient avec lui de la religion des indiens et réalise avec lui le voyage du campus de l’université de Berkeley (San Francisco) vers le territoire des Indiens Winnebago. Ajoutons qu’il s'agit de l’image de Dieu de Huston Smith et de questions comme: quelle spiritualité pour le troisième millénaire et de quoi sera suivi le post-modernisme?

Jordi Savall, grootmeester van de vroege muziek en een van de succesvolste musici van het moment, begon zijn carrière als zevenjarige knaap. Zijn soundtrack voor de film ‘Tous les Matins du Monde’, met in de hoofdrol Gérard Depardieu, bezorgde Savall een internationale doorbraak. Hij richtte drie gezelschappen op en creëerde een eigen platenlabel. Savall is overtuigd van de spirituele kracht van de muziek. Toch is schoonheid in de muziek niet voldoende, zo vindt hij. Als de religieuze dimensie ontbreekt, kunnen de gevolgen desastreus zijn.

Jordi Savall
Jordi Savall, master of the early music and one of the most successful musicians of the moment, started his career as a seven-year-old boy. Savall received international recognition thanks to the soundtrack of the movie ‘Tous les Matins du Monde’, with Gérard Depardieu. He established three companions and created his own record company. Savall is persuaded by the spiritual strength of music. But this beauty in music is not sufficient, he finds. If the religious dimension is lacking, the impact can be calamitous.

Jordi Savall, grand maître de musique ancienne et l’un des musiciens le plus talentueux à l’heure actuelle, a commencé sa carrière à l’âge de sept ans. Sa bande sonore pour le film ‘Tous les Matins du Monde’, avec Gérard Depardieu dans le rôle principal, lui a valu une reconnaissance internationale. Il a fondé trois sociétés et créé son propre label de disques. Savall est convaincu de la force spirituelle de la musique. Mais la beauté dans la musique n'est pas suffisante selon lui. S’il y manque sa dimension religieuse, les conséquences peuvent être désastreuses.
